Adding to her list of accomplishments in her career, CharlieCurls co-founder Kris Akins received the high honor to be selected as a White House entrepreneur during the first ever Entrepreneur Demo Day. Attending alongside was her daughter and co-founder Ciera Akins. Together the two had the opportunity to network with other esteemed American entrepreneurs. Kris was featured as “one of the best and brightest” as she stood behind President Obama during his speech. The President spoke to private, public and press interests supporting a new community of entrepreneurial ventures that will support huge swaths of our creative population.
Kris was invited for another entrepreneurial venture, BikeTrak, a GPS anti-theft tracking device for bicycles. Ciera was invited as a budding entrepreneur for being part of CharlieCurls. The event took place in the West Wing Grand Foyer and attached rooms in the White House, complete with the grand portraits of Presidents and First Ladies, marble columns and crystal chandeliers. The views out the windows were of the Washington monument, the Rose Garden and the circular portico.
Soldiers, sailors and pilots in full dress uniform mixed throughout the crowd of government dignitaries, private business, science, technology and investor sectors, and the national press. In total, thirty-two companies, including BikeTrak, had tradeshow style displays and presented their entrepreneurial stories and products to a vast array of people interested in making entrepreneurialism a career choice.
“We met Bill Nye the Science Guy, Penny Pritzker, Secretary of Commerce and Steve Case, founder of AOL among many others,” states Ciera. “Everyone seems to have had a bike or two stolen in their lives.”
CharlieCurls was on the mouths of many of the start up pioneers as Ciera networked throughout the White House rooms.
“Ciera spoke to every girl with long hair about CharlieCurls and we added several CharlieGirls to our roster because of her enthusiasm,” said Kris. “It was a magical trip. We met fantastic entrepreneurs and have a lot of follow-on resources to tap as we grow both companies.”
There is exciting growth happening with CharlieCurls. Entrepreneur Kris Akins had her finger on the pulse at the White House. With Ciera’s exuberance for life, the brand will continue to reach woman across the world with its message of natural beauty.
